The USVI Trip-Planning Toolkit
Ferries, airports, passport rules, weather and getting-around — the unglamorous details that make an island trip feel effortless. (And when you'd rather skip all of it, Caribbean Zest drives.)
Entry Rules for U.S. Citizens
The U.S. Virgin Islands is unincorporated U.S. territory — you don't clear immigration, you don't need a passport, and your phone carrier and credit cards just work.
Flights from the mainland
No passport required. Bring a government photo ID — as of May 2025, a REAL ID-compliant driver's license (or passport/other TSA-accepted ID) is required to board U.S. departures, including to the islands.
Sensible backup
Old-school rule of thumb for cruise and air re-entry: a birth certificate with raised seal (or voter registration card) plus photo ID. A passport is still the least-arguing way to travel.
Day trip to the British Virgin Islands?
The BVI is a separate British territory — a valid passport IS required to island-hop from St. Thomas, and you'll clear customs both ways.
Non-U.S. citizens
Entry follows U.S. federal rules (visa or ESTA). Since you may connect through Puerto Rico, plan for U.S. immigration once on arrival.
Arriving by Cruise Ship
Ships dock at Havensight, American Yacht Harbor or 99 Docks in Charlotte Amalie — all within a short hop of downtown. Tenders anchor off Magens Bay and some west-end beaches. Book shore transfers ahead: ship-day taxis queue, but Caribbean Zest meets you pier-side, luggage handled.

Know Before You Ferry
- • Vehicle space is first-come on most routes — golf carts and rental jeeps queue at Red Hook by 7 a.m.
- • BVI crossings require a passport and customs paperwork for the boat.
- • Water taxis on Red Hook⇄Cruz Bay run continuously for foot passengers when the car ferry is loaded.
Getting Around the Islands
Safari Taxis
Open-air shared vans run fixed routes (~$7–9/pp). Slow, social, scenic — the island commute.
Taxis & Rideshares
No meters — agree the fare first. No Uber/Lyft on-island; pre-book for night trips and cruises.
Rental Cars
Drive on the LEFT. Steep, narrow, potholed — rent the highest-clearance vehicle you can find and take the night quiz on Mountain Top Road seriously.
Zest Door-to-Door
Chauffeured vans, sedans & limousines with luggage help and wheelchair-accessible seating — zero logistics, zero parking dread.
Weather & Best Time to Visit
It's 78–84°F water-year-round up here. The differences are wind, rain and crowds — pick your season:
Cool trade winds, zero humidity complaints, full cruise season and the best (most expensive) hotel rates. Book tours 8+ weeks ahead; Magens Bay empties fast on ship days.
Long sunny days, warm water, fewer ships and friendlier prices. Afternoon showers arrive like clockwork and leave by dinner.
Warmest seas, calmest beaches, deep deals — and a real (if statistically modest) storm risk. Watch the forecast, buy trip insurance, and you may have Trunk Bay to yourself.
Storm season officially closes November 30. Holiday hotels come back online before the Christmas price jump, and the island's regatta calendar gets underway.

USVI Travel FAQ
No. The USVI is U.S. territory with passport-free entry from the mainland — bring a REAL ID-compliant photo ID for flights, and keep a birth certificate or passport handy for re-entry peace of mind. Only a British Virgin Islands hop needs a passport.
Cyril E. King (STT) on St. Thomas is the main hub, Henry E. Rohlsen (STX) serves St. Croix, and commuter carriers like Cape Air hop between them in about 25 minutes. Most St. John guests fly into STT and ferry across.
Take the Red Hook–Cruz Bay vehicle ferry (~20 minutes, every 15–30 min daytime) or a foot-passenger water taxi from the same dock. Taxis and our transfer vans meet boats on both sides.
December–April is dry-season peak; May–July is the shoulder sweet spot; August–October brings hurricane-season deals and warm water — just monitor forecasts and carry trip insurance.
U.S. dollars and 120V outlets. Mainland phone plans work (USVI = domestic for most carriers). Tipping 15–20% is standard where service is excellent — which, between us, is most places.
