St. Croix History on every corner, reef on every shore

The big sister of the USVI — 85 square miles of Danish colonial towns, sugar-mill ruins, wreck-diving capitals and a barrier reef so pristine it's a national monument. This is where locals go on vacation.

The Insider Brief

Two Towns, One Island, Zero Pretense

St. Croix flies under the radar — a 25-minute hop from San Juan or a direct jet from Atlanta — and rewards the trip with the most authentic island life in the USVI.

Christiansted, on the north side, is the postcard: a deepwater port ringed by pastel Danish warehouses, a floating dock you can walk straight off the cruise ship into, and the Wharfside Mall built into an 1800s trading hall. Frederiksted, at the west end, is the island's cool, quieter cousin — rainbow-colored buildings, the best sunsets in the territory, and the deep drop-off that makes its pier famous for shore diving.

Drive east and you hit the rainforest hills, the Cruzan Rum Distillery (the oldest continuously operating distillery in the hemisphere, since 1760) and Point Udall at Cape Henry — marked by the giant Danish "El Cañonero" sundial gun — the easternmost point of the United States and the first place in America to see sunrise.

Zest Tip

Book the Buck Island catamaran for the first morning of your trip — the reef trip is the island's crown jewel, and afternoons can blow up choppy.

Getting There & Around

Fly STX, Rent a Car, Say "Alor"

Henry E. Rohlsen Airport (STX) gets direct jets from Atlanta and Charlotte plus quick hops from San Juan and St. Thomas. Inter-island: Cape Air and VI Airlink run the STT↔STX shuttle in about 25 minutes. On island, you'll want wheels — the east and west ends are a 45-minute drive apart. Locals greet with "Alor!" and mean it.
